Rambling after Week 10...

Mayor Donny Ness......yuk.  As Forest Gump once said, "and that's all I have to say about that"..

Anyway, I'm going to avoid that topic and make this week's Ramblings more of a pictorial.  I got a nice 8-pointer on Sunday - not as nice as Scottie's though - and took some other pics from the woods out near Canosia and 194

Starting off would be breakfast time.  Typically, the group meets up at either Trader's, Oliver's or my parent's house at 5:30.  A pile of food is prepared for the 3 or 4 people that show up to eat.  Usually, it includes just about every type of food offered in the Vegas buffets - although none of the raw salmon that Juice tells me is a regular menu item for a Stockholm breakfast (crazy Swedes).  I don't have a picture of our typical breakfast, but if I did, it might be something like this...

Next up would be getting into the woods just after sun up.  A little late I know, but tradition is tradition I guess.  I'm not the kind to make what you'd call an "effort" and build a stand or anything.  I rather choose to pack up my good old Duluth pack with my thermos of cappuccino, pb & j sandwich, semi-dull hatchet and three week old Sports Illustrated and throw it on my back along with my favorite country music festival issued camping chair.

not to scale

My weapon of choice is a late 40's/early 50's era lever action Winchester 30-30.  It has a scope mounted on it, but is pretty useless over a couple hundred yards.  That's ok though, I'm not playing sniper out there, just hiding on top of a hill and looking for the close shot.  But anyway, it's a nice short gun, easy to walk through the woods with and not get too tangled up in the brush.  Works for me.  An interesting note on this gun is that it has a scope mounted on it even though the lever action pops the shells out the top of the chamber - because of that, the scope is mounted kinda on the side of the gun rather than over the top.  I guess my grandpa came up with that setup - works pretty slick, but once again, not a good set-up for super long shots.

So I do a lot of sitting and watching (and some sleeping) from my We Fest chair in the woods.  I did a little walking about during lunchtime on Saturday to try and find a good spot to eat lunch.  After hiking around a bit, I sat down next to one of the many beaver ponds on the property and ate my sandwich and sipped on the still ridiculously hot cappuccino.

Those pesky beavers

So to move this story along.....I saw a couple deer in the afternoon on Saturday, but didn't have a shot.  Not a bad day - got a little wet in the rain/snow mix - but no deer.

Sunday morning, same breakfast pattern, out in the woods by 6:40 and ready to go.  The good news, the bucks that morning were chasing does like Ben at The Palace on a Saturday night.  It was a calm and fairly crisp morning which made it nice and easy to hear just about everything moving around.  A little after 7:30 a doe came out to my right and walked all the way around me and off to my left.  I knew something was up because she kept looking back.  That was the sign for me to be ready.....I saw the buck come through, but with all the brush in the way, didn't have a shot.  I figured I'd have to wait for him to go all the way around me, but he short-cutted right in front.  First shot was about 40 yards out I suppose - hit him there, then he bounded up another 40 yards further and I drilled him again.  He only went another hundred yards and that was it.  Not a bad deer, my first 'real' buck.  Pretty happy with that.  The meat is already cut up over at Adolph (by Steve Beaudin among others) and I'll be having some venison this weekend.  All in all, I was back on the couch for the Vikings kickoff that day, so it was a good weekend.

On to the BIG....

Second round of the Division games are rolling and still very little separation has shown.  In the Bulldog Division, the Little Bastards are the current leader in the clubhouse at 7-3 with a 1 game lead over Juice and 2 games up on Smith and Jason.  I'm still sticking with current league scoring leader Smith taking this division, but Jon's team is holding up pretty damn good.  Big - nay, HUGE - matchup this week with those two teams facing off.  If Jon wins this one, he'll just about knock Smitty out of the playoffs.  Do I see that happening?  No prediction here, other than, first team to 135 wins this one.

In the Husky D, Kinger, with a .500 record, leads Scottie and Jonny by a game.  It's still wide open though with Jonny currently holding the divisional tiebreaker.  If Jack can get Marvin and Andre back he has a chance - but I've been saying that for about 5 weeks now.  My money is on Jonny even without AP for a few weeks.  Larry Fitz and Dono have been solid lately and I see those two leading this team to Jonny's 3rd playoff appearance.

Finally, the Bison Division is tight with JC leading Mike by a game and Jugs by 2 after the Fantasy Superior managed to knock off the Sailors in a tough week 10 match.  Similar to the Bulldogs, JC faces Jugs in week 11 in a big game for both teams.  With a win, JC will just about eliminate Jugs from the divisional championship race.  No predictions here either - JC needs some sort of consistent RB play while Jugs needs Witten to get back on track and have some more big games like earlier in the year.

The old....IF THE PLAYOFFS WERE TODAY....

Bulldogs - LB's 7-3
Husky dogs - Kinger 5-5
Bisons - JC 8-2
Wildcard - Sailors 7-3

Vikings suck.  Rails get an atta boy for the effort - and look forward to next year, this Nelson kid can toss it.  Finally, T-minus 17 days till the Vegas half marathon....am I ready, nope.  Will I be?  We'll see.

Need I say more?
