Rambling after week 6....
Time for some more Ramblings....I can't believe how fast the weeks go. This week, and don't ask me why cause I don't really know, I'm going with a cliche themed ramble. I suppose a lot of them somewhat relate to sports...kinda like all of my thoughts.
"You can't have it all".
Boy ain't that the truth. I'd say the Raiders fall head first into this category (and probably break a hip doing so). Super Bowl in '03....yes, believe it or not that was this year....amazing what biology can do to a(some) player(s) over so few sunrises.
Does it get any better than 9 pm on Monday Night? (Or 8 if you happen to live in Minne-sota...or probably right about coffee break time in Why-o-min'). Hank firing up the show and, although you don't know when it starts, the best produced 36-0 game you've seen in a long time.
Another MNF note....Lisa Guerrero has all but made me forget about Missy missing (I don't know if that counts as alliteration, but that's as close as this engineer will get) from the sidelines. On the other hand, into his second season, Madden has us longing for the days of silent television....no, wait, then we could still see him.
"When at first you don't succeed, try try again"
Um....I'll go with the J - E - T - S....JETS JETS JETS. They finally put a W up on the board for head coach Hermie "Hancock" Edwards. Of course their opponent, the Bills, have managed to morph into the second coming of the Cinci Bungles (or Oakland Raiders).
On that note....I think the Drew Bledsoe farewell tour may be occuring before our eyes.
Also speaking of down and out teams that have been mentioned three times already in this column now....the Raiders wake will be from 12-3 on Sundays through December. Friends are asked to not give gifts but to donate towards the purchase of a skill player born after the Kennedy assination.
"You get nothing for free"
How about this one for Jake Plummer. He gets to go to a winning team, BUT he is now injured for a month.
Doesn't it piss you off to hear that Bulger's parents had to force him to play football as a yout? (Yea I just typed "yout"...if you can't hear Pesci doing the "My Cousin Vinnie" accent in your head....go rent the movie and get it in there) He must hate his parents since he grew up to be something he didn't want to be (and only about 10,000,000 people within spitting distance of the Ed Jones Dome would take his job for a nickel).
Speaking of Bulger and his MNF counterpart Doug Johnson.....are there two QB's in the league that are any whiter?
"It'll feel better when it stops hurting"
Can I relate this to Don Zimmer at all? Sure, why not. See now my problem is this....which way to go with the Don Zimmer joke....so here it is,
Don Zimmer....A) was sidestepped like a bull in Pamplona. B) is surprisingly not fused to the bench in the Bronx. C) did NOT leak gravy when cut inbetween the eyes. D) possibly outweighs Aaron Gibson and Aaron Neville. E) will be the undercard vs. Forman @ the MGM Grand next month.
"Live and learn"
Wocka, Wocka, Wocka....tackled twice by a kicka.
This one also works for last Friday. I had my crow nice and warm, ready to eat, my right foot firmly there and my left had just touched before jumping far far away from the Gophers bandwagon.
"Carpe diem"
I am not sure if the games have started yet....but go Cubbies....and go Sox.
"Always look on the bright sight of life"
This is for Ahman Green. At least you made quite a few Vikings and Chiefs fans very happy. (Sorry Ciskie)
Off subject a bit....JC's movie recommendation of the week is, "Out of Time". Denzel's new movie is solid if you are in to shows like Law and Order or CSI. It's got a good plot, good acting and a few hotties to keep you interested in the lower points. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
"You see? I told you I was sick!"
I've never really heard this cliche but....what happened to Aeneas Williams's face? Who game him a flesh eating virus?
Todd Yoder should retire now. Last Sunday was his turn for "career day". He was sick...that's what the kids are calling it these days.
As operaman would say, "El Steve-ooooo McNair-oooo....for M.V.P-oooooooo."
"I used to think I had it bad because I had no shoes, then I met a man with no feet"
This is the oddball that doesn't fit. Kind of like when you are the St. Louie playcaller and pull the old "trickeration" with pitching to your RB heading left...then he pitches to the WR reversing right....who then throws for a whole 12 yard gain to your other WR who ran about 60 yards across the field to get that few yards. Martz, we get it, you have a good offense, now how about winning games against real teams OR on the road. Either will suffice.
Time for Wonger....
And a few comments…..and a few responses
With the World Series less than a week away, I thought I give my five
observations of 2003 MLB postseason.
1) There is a 60-40 chance in my mind that A.J., Eddie, LaTroy, and Jacque
will not be on the Twins next season. Gardy and Corey deserved their
contract extensions or options, but I have a feeling that unless Pohlad
sells the team, 2004 will be the last run for the World Series for awhile. - Is that the official line in Vegas?
2) The Yankees starting pitching is money in the playoffs, even if Wells and
Clemens may be taking on the shuffleboard table quite soon. - Just a question, cause I didn't know this if it is true....is it technically called a shuffleboard table?
3) I still can’t understand why former Twins Todd Walker, Jason Varitek, and
David Ortiz have displayed consistent power this postseason. Whoops, I
guess I forgot to look at that lineup. But it probably won’t matter anyways
because of the Curse of the Bambino. - When did Varitek play for the Twins? And when did David Ortiz actually 'play' for the Twins?
4) How much longer will the Curse of the Billygoat haunt Cubs fans? It’s
already outlived Harry Carey, isn’t that enough? - Hey, I figure Harry Carey probably took a year or two to get in good with the big guy upstairs, then after gaining his trust he stole his keys and turned on the "Cubs Win" switch.
5) I-Rod has proven me wrong and yes, he can perform in the playoffs? - IF the 'Fish make it to the Series they will be the second worst team to get there....just behind the first Marlins squad that made it back in the '90's
This week we will find out if the we should take the Vikings really
seriously or not. I thought beating Green Bay in Lambeau was a great win
(and still think it is), but after seeing the Packers have a meltdown of
near Golden Gopher proportions against the Chiefs, I’m not so sure.
Prediction: Vikes 31, Broncos 27. - No we won't. Portis has been beat up, Plummer is gonna be in street clothing and Dainty is back. This will be a huge upset if the Vikes do not win.
Quick Viking Tidbit: Every practice, Mike Tice has his players perfect each
play before moving on to the next one. If there are too many mistakes, the
team has to start practice all over again, including stretching. Now that’s
instilling preparation and discipline in my mind. - Now that is discipline. I like it. Juice take note for your future days as a head coach. (Also happy 24th....I'm sure you are as excited about it as I was)
Political Point: Arnold (the Governator) said his first action as Governor
of CA will be to rescind the increase in the car tax. Well, after finding
out that Governator owns 9 Hummers (that’ll make those anti-SUV types happy,
right) worth about a million bucks, it’s quite clear why he seeks to do
that. In economics, this is called this rent-seeking. In real life, this
is called political opportunism. - Hey, to each his own.
Finally, I want to give my prayers and condolences to the Jugasek family on
their great loss of their dog Kelsey. It is unfortunate that losses such as
these are a part of life. - Ditto.
That's all from wonger....
And now it is time to go....so the "goodbye" cliches will close it this week
"Goodbye is not an easy word to say" -- unless she's from Wisconsin
"Partir, c'est mourir un peu" -- damn French
"You'll find your way to heaven, I'll meet you when you are there" -- But I'll call for directions first
"I will always remember you" -- For about 10 more seconds
"Parting is such sweet sorrow" -- Way too cheesy...this is a great example of why cliches should not be used
"The sun in your eyes made some of the lies worth believing" -- no comment needed
Need I say more?
