Rambling after Week 1...

Something something sons of bitches (as Trush might say).  Nothing like having your fantasy season come to a very rocky start.  Every once in a while you get one of those Sundays where it seems like every single Fox update shows someone on your opponent's team scoring a 50+ yard touchdown.  This past Sunday was as bad as it gets for me.  Shaun goes for 51 yards against the Lions....the fricking Lions.  Chad Johnson has zero points in the second half.  As for Scottie's team.....I'll just name his starters.  Hasselbeck, Ronnie Brown, Reggie Bush, Donte Stollworth, Hines Ward, Alge Crumpler, Adam Vinatieri and the Bears.  They're all on the path to being All-Pros....well, at least every time they play me anyway.

So needless to say, I join the ranks of the LB's, Smitty, Jonny, Mike and the rookie Kinger in the 0-1 camp.  (although Jon will argue he doesn't belong here with his 110).  Anywho....each division had 2 winners and 2 losers.  Maybe we finally have a little parity through the league without the Bulldogs beating up on the rest of us....then again, it is only one week.

And that one week saw the following.....

  • Vikings win - Chester Taylor will be the man, if his legs don't fall off with all the touches he'll get.
  • Packers lose - Brettski looked bad, but in his defense, the Bears looked REALLY good.
  • Raiders - uhg.  That was horrible.
  • Manning v. Manning - Was it possible to over hype this any more than it was?
  • 49ers - Another season, another loss.  But hello Frank Gore and Vernon Davis
  • Chiefs - Another week, another 10 grabs for Gonzo.
  • Jets - Who is even on this team anymore?
  • Saints - Reggie might actually not be over rated.
  • Texans - How long will the David Carr experiment last?
  • Steelers - Charlie Batch?  Wow - who's next, Scott Mitchell?  Akili Smith?  Jeff George?
  • Tampa - Are they really that bad?
  • Baltimore - Does a new quarterback make them that good?

It's still plenty early, so much will still happen as the season progresses.  I guess the biggest thing so far is that no major surprise players have emerged, so there shouldn't be any issues with fighting for FA's quite yet.  But with past seasons having Boldin or Willie Parker types going undrafted, I'm sure there will be some guys that will show the next couple weeks.

Anyway.....since I've got some time (and really don't want to work on my house tonight), I'm gonna go back and look at past week 1's in the league and how this week compared.

  • This year there were 6 teams at or over 100.  The record is 8 teams in 2002.
  • This lowest week 1 score this year was Jonny's 69.  (that's where Richie would giggle)  The highest week 1 low ever was Suomala's 74 in 2002.
  • Scottie's 145 was the 3rd highest week 1 ever - Ben had 157 in 2002 and Juice had 149 in 2004.
  • The total points were 1,204 this week for an average of just a smidge over 100 per team.  That is third behind the 1,269 scored in both 2002 and 2004.

So the real question is, who can remember the Pirates of Penzance but not the H.M.S Pinafore?  (if you have any idea what I'm talking about, you either live in my house or are named Sam).

The conversation in the room has now turned from a debate on the question if bacon continues to cook after it is taken off the heat (votes were 2-1 against continued cooking), to country superstars playing Guitar Heroes so loud the cops needed to stop them, to how chewy a noodle must be before it is ready to eat...."is it chewier than a noodle is intended to be?".  Needless to say, I have surrounded myself with interesting people.

And back to the point (although I would debate myself on the need to return to the point since this is called The Ramblings).  Week 2 matchups are coming, and we'll settle in with a normal NFL schedule for a while - at least until the Turkey fairy comes around and decides we need to have more Thursday games.

That's enough for now - the boys finished cooking up their hamburger helper (and contrary to cousin Eddie's belief, it is better with the hamburger included) - so I'm going to partake.

Enjoy week 2.....and good luck (except for the LB of course).

Need I say more?
